EU-LAC Museums project is entering into its final week of activities The School of Art History and Museums, Galleries and Collections Institute (MGCI) coordinated “EU-LAC Museums: Museums and Community: Concepts, Experiences, and Sustainability in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean” is entering into its final week of activities (September 2016 – January 2021).
Led by Dr Karen Brown, School of Art History, and supported by Project Administrator and Youth Programme Worker Jamie Allan Brown, School of Art History, the basis of the project is that community museums in Latin American and Caribbean countries, in particular, allow under-represented communities to stake a place in history, as well as contributing to environmental sustainability and community empowerment. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, the University has led a consortium from Portugal, Spain, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
The project’s objective has been to meet the Horizon 2020 INT12 (2015) challenge of fostering cultural relations between Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Now in a COVID-19 extension until January 2021, the consortium of international community leaders, museum professionals, researchers and policymakers will share their Recommendations concerning “Community Museums and Sustainable Development”, “Community Participation for Bi-Regional Integration”, and “Technology and Innovation for Crisis Recovery”, through a Policy Round Table to be held (virtually) in Brussels, 20 January 2021. The event will be opened with remarks by ICOM President Alberto Garlandini.
In the face of societal and sustainability challenges, the EU-LAC Museums project partners have fostered a sense of interconnectivity, support, and research activism that will serve as a model for future bi-regional and interdisciplinary research projects.
